House slated for demolition/recycling. Home to a bee colony.
Inside the house, Scoping out the best way to tackle the removal.
Dan
is on the right. The expert helper is nephew Hayden, who is taking
beekeeping as a 4-H project. It also happens to be Hayden's 11th
Birthday!
Adam,
our construction/structural guru (and Hayden's dad), checks the outside
structure. He has made it clear he wants nothing to do with bees,
only there for Hayden and to advise on best access to the bees.
The
'rusty' looking spot under the tree branch is a hole in the
wall. There are a few bees (foragers) coming and going, but
not too many.
Dan
with a cordless circular saw, cutting through the plaster-lathe
wall. Adam (no bees for me...I'm advising) is the other
white-knight.
Still cutting up the wall. The pic is not out of focus, the cloud is plaster dust and smoke.
Using a flatbar, the wall is opened from bottom to top.
Exposed brood nest. Bees don't seem to care we are here!
Continuing to open the colony, These bees are docile, very few flying, little aggression.
